Q & A Part Four - November 21st 2006 Part 3 Part 2 Part 1

1. My question for boz is: what rockabilly bands does he listen to these days. Also I'd like to know which guitarists influenced him the most, and which is his favorite guitar. Jorge Padilla

hi, well Big Sandy and the Fly Right Boys continue to make great records and I always enjoy their shows. The Portugese bands are having it at the moment too, 49 special did a great show at Dingwalls recently and The Mean Devils have a great sound. I was influenced by a strage mixture of glam guitarists like Marc Bolan and Mick Ronson along with the great rockabilly players like Scotty Moore and Cliff Gallup. My fave guitar is my 63 Fender Telecaster, a great work horse!

2. I would love to know how you begin to write a song. Do you have a particular riff or melody which you build on first or does the whole song including all twiddly bits come to you in one creative swoop?

Many thanks

From an inquisitive soul – Sally in Manchester x

All ways! Sometimes I'll hook up a drum bet and take it from there, sometimes there'll be a particular riff or chord sequence, sometimes it just all falls into place immediately...

PS Did you write ‘Spring-Heeled Jim’ ? I love the bass line in that tune

Yes, that was one of mine and bass line is from the demo, very simle but very effective I think

3. out of all of the smiths songs you have played with Morrissey which one have you found to be the most difficult to play?

Headmaster’s ritual seemed to be the most puzzling, the chord shapes must have come from an open tuned guitar!

4. Who do you prefer working with Alain Whyte or Jessie Tobias ?

2 different players, both exciting to work with in their own way. I enjoy playing with both of them!

5. What is the best song in your opinion that you have written for Moz ?

Well I would have to say it's between Jack the ripper [which was the first and special for that reason], The more you ignore me, and more recently Christian Dior and I like you.

6. What is your favorite Morrissey album you have worked on? And including the Smiths what is your favorite Morrissey/Smiths album you have not worked on?

thanks
Matthew Speight

I always like the last album that was recorded because it is the most immediate in my head and most memorable - but Vauxhall will always have a special place for me. Smiths-wise Strangeways is the album I have played the most and Kill Uncle I like to revisit sometimes

7. How old were you when you first quiffed your hair?

Well there's a pass port photo from around 1976 when it first started to take place...

What's your favourite guitar chord? (mine is D minor 7)

I suppose it's E69 the chord at the end of all the Elvis sun songs

Do you feel embarrassed when ladies squeal at you at gigs?

Not embarrassed, I think it's a bit of fun!

(and thank you Boz for looking concerned when that fight broke out at Grimsby)

...well I am always concerned if the security come on too heavy.

I could ask more, but I shall restrain myself. ;)

toodlepip,
Helen.

8. hi boz I wondered what is your favourite song to play live and what your enjoying about the tour this time.
love karin x

Well it always changes, presently I enjoyed In the future a lot, coma is always good to play, I used to enjoy November a lot too!

9. Mr. Boz whyt hasn't Morrissey used more rockabilly style in his music since Your Arsenal and do you wish he would do more of it in the future and does he still have an interest in that sound today?Ithink

He still digs some good rockabilly stuff like Nat Couty and Charlie Feathers but I think we have developed a lot since then, and you have to move forward!

10. Hi Boz

Hope you enjoyed Halifax as much as I did.
Who is on the picture projected at the stage?
Thanks for a top Gig
Daz Halifax dude

Halifax? Always nice in small venues, I think it was a good show.
The picture that we used back then was of a very young Sacha Distel and later on we had a big back drop of Oscar Wilde.

11. Hi Boz, I always wandered what the classical music was at the start of The Teachers are afraid of the pupils. I read the other day it was a sample of Shostakovich. My question for you - who chooses samples that you use in your music? Is it a band decision or down to an individual? Cracking song by the way! Cheers Boz, Andy.

Well yes it is Shostakovich, Symphony Number 5, a piece I studied at school.
I chose it and wrote the song around it, incorporating the melodies into the chord sequences.

12. Hi Boz,
What's your most memorable or favourite concert you played in and why?

Best wishes

From
Paul Johnston

hi , most memorable? LA forum when Bowie dueted with Moz for the encore, Dallas when it went mad, Reading when we did How soon is now, last palladium show was special too, there's been a lot!

13. Dear Boz:

Are you steering your daughters towards or away from a rock'n'roll career?

I like to think it's their choice, if they need encouragement, it's there. Billie played drums and studied orchestral percussion and Pearl's just embarking on learning the piano.

School's out - Alice Cooper
...oops that's 7, take off the last 2 if you have to!

What did the last text message you receive say?

”wot time r u expecting 2 b home? we have new lox on door so ur key wont work! let me no if u want 2 leave new key out 4 u?”
From Rose my sister-in-law.

What is the ultimate game show of all time?
Well “Price is right” wins hands down of course the US version.
”Deal or no deal” is nicely mind numbing too...

Complete joy!

Lazza
