Q & A Part Three - September 7th 2006 Part 2 Part 1

1. Hello Boz,
Nice to "meet" you.
Obviously I'm a Moz fan since I was very young. Now I'm 33 years old and i'm very glad i had the chance of seeing Morrissey and the band, twice here, in Buenos Aires.
Is there any possibility of seeing you again down here?
Sincerely,
Gisela Dassis

hi
I hope so, we all had a great time in South America, it's a great place and the shows were really good. At the moment there's no plans but hopefully in the future, when all's well...

2.Hi Boz,
Just wanted to say you're a great guitarist & you put so much into the music of Morrissey. What I wanted to know is, what is your favorite song from, "Ringleader...?"
Cheers,

Tim

Fave ringleader song? That changes all the time, it's "I'll never be anybody's hero" at the moment

3. Boz. What was the inspiration for the music behind "Reader Meet Author"? I still feel it is Morrissey's strongest solo recording.

Thanks

Antony

Hi
well I wrote the music on a small tenor guitar Lloyd Tripp made me in 1995 while was in a hotel in San Francisco. The guitar had a great ring to it when you played those particular chords.

4. What's your favorite humorous Morrissey anecdote? After so many years, what makes your collaboration work? It's interesting how he has a reputation for being "difficult," yet you and Alain have been working with him for almost sixteen years.

anecdote? I don't really have anecdotes - he's very funny sometimes, and difficult? well I think we must have some respect for each other somewhere because we get on ok and never really crowd each other.

Morrissey mentioned that you had a great influence on Ringleader of the Tormentors despite your lack of songwriting credits. What are some of your key contributions that the "average listener" may not hear or recognize?

Well when the songs were recorded they were very full, 3 guitars and not much in the way of arrangements. So the bits where instruments cut out, that's my bits, for example "dear god" when it goes to just piano in the middle...

Now that Alain no longer tours with Morrissey, you and Gary are the two remaining British members of "Th'Lads." How do you feel this has changed the dynamic of the group?

I don't really notice it personally, but I suppose it has American players, particularly drummers have a different feel, but it has been a gentle process and I haven't noticed the change.

Which of Alain's song(s) and Jesse's song(s) do you most enjoy performing?
Cheers,

Jamie

At the moment, "Ganglord", "Trouble loves me" and "In the future".

5. How do the songs that you play live with Morrissey get chosen? Does Morrissey choose them or do you have a say in it as well?

Well I may make a suggestion but Moz writes the song list every night...

6. What is the songwriting process like with Morrissey? Is it: 1. You meet with him with a tape of riffs, ideas. 2. He skims through them and decides what he likes. 3. He then writes lyrics. 4. You try to fit your music to his lyrics. Or, is it literally more of a collaboration, just you two sitting in a room and hammering it out? Will he tell you what kind of sound he's looking for in a song, i.e. early 70's Bowie/Mick Ronson sound? Would you always have to make a case for him to choose your songs over Alain's?
Thanks, Manny

No, Moz writes to a backing track recorded by the writer - best song wins!

7. Do you have any personal gig plans after the tour with Moz?
Give us a shout if you're doing any gigs down the Camden area and I'll start dusting off my loudest and biggest collared shirt

Cheers

Dave

Can't do anything really til the tour is over.

8. I was really suprised to see you involved in The OneThree project....which I brought and I loved incidently, but intially were you sceptical when you saw the band had a hip hop influence and how do you rate the lyrical side of it having worked with so many artists?
Cheers Rob

Well obviously I like it, I wouldn't get in involved in anything I didn't dig...it was a refreshing change for me and I thought I could make the songs sound good with some expressive experimental sounds. The lyrics I think are quite clever and some are very amusing.

9. Hey Boz

What was it like when you met Johnny Marr? Was it a friendly exchange? Cheers

Kas from Slough

Yeah I met Johnny a few times, he's always very nice and we get on well.

10. Sorry we didn’t see you at Viva Las Vegas this year. Any plans to play again in the future? Or any other rockabilly weekenders ?

Mitch

I've been asked to play at the next Greenbay festival in 2006.

11. . Hi Boz

When was the last time you seen Adam (Ant) and do you think he could ever be persuaded into performing again - perhaps some accoustic/unplugged type shows maybe???

Yours, with respect

Tommy

hi last time I saw Adam was at one of the Morrissey shows at the Festival Hall. Haven't spoken to him in a while and I dont know how he feels about performing, it would be great if he did but it's up to him obviously.

12. Boz,

I got the sense from Tony Visconti's site that you were in charge of Ringleader's early recordings, and Morrissey said that you were heavily involved in the sessions. Can you shed some light on your role in the making of Ringleader?

Thanks for the great music & best wishes,

Ryan

hi, see above - Tony came in after a month of recording which I over saw and helped in the arrangements quite heavily.

13. Hello Boz,

14. Hi Boz,

Love your music and your bands sounds.
Being a guitarist I also realy enjoyed the article on your guitar collection in Guitar magazine couple of years ago....but when will you be featured in more guitar magazines??
Maybe you could use some of your website space on info on your guitar equipment.

Thank you for the musical inspiration!

Greetz,
Thomas Szarre-Belgium

hi
well I am doing one tomorrow in a Swedish magazine! And yes I'll try and do some guitar stuff for the site.

15. Hi Boz,
I'm probably one of your youngest fans! I think your songwriting work is fantastic and I wanted to know what music you grew up on and who influences you today? Keep up the good work and good luck in the current tour and I am looking forward to seeing you. Thank you.
Howard Hoodle

hi
Well I grew up to t.rex, then punk rock and 50s rockabilly, so that's the root of it all really... nowadays I listen to a broader section of music and anything and everything influences me.
