John's Children
Final gig

15/9/01 Underworld, London

A few years back Boz managed to reanimate John's Children, the first chartbreaking band of his great hero Marc Bolan. After a good few years of producing and playing with them, they decided to call it a day - mainly on drummer Chris' initiative - and play their last official gig at the Underworld in the heart of Camden Town.

The crowd had already been put in the mood by Boz ("Hey Boz - great hair!") from behind the dj desk when he entered the stage alongside singer Andy Ellison, drummer Chris Townson and bassist Martin Gordon. But before the guys broke into rock'n'roll frenzy, things went silent for a minute when Andy read out a written statement by Rolan Bolan, Marc Bolan's son who was supposed to perform with them but had been unable to leave Los Angeles due to the recent terrorist attacks in the US ( I suppose the stage being decorated in star-spangled banners had to do with that too ).

But without further ado the band started giving it their best... The crowd was small but way into it. The set included some great John's Children classics like "Desdemona", "Sara crazy child" and "Midsummer night's scene" - the kind of songs that even if you're not a massive fan of the band make you go "Hm, I've heard that one before..." without really knowing where and when. Andy Ellison's stage act is really one to remember, as usual he was jumping around amongst the crowd, dangling down from pipes and curtains, climbing over speakers, on Boz's shoulders and finally stripping off his shirt and pants ( I wonder what else he did way-back-when ?! ). The band's contribution to celebrating the anniversary of Marc Bolan's death was to play some T.Rex classics aswell, like "20th Century boy", "Children of the revolution" (with Boz delivering some unforgettable backing vocals) and the immaculate "Cosmic dancer". Sadly, due to the club's regulations they were a bit hard pressed for time but they did come out for a few encores. All in all a great and well received concert put on by some brilliant musicians, with some sentimental moments too, just as it should be for a last official show ever.

The unofficial last (or maybe not last?) show was played one night later at a fan's bash for Marc Bolan's anniversary though - Chris however stuck to his word and refrained from drumming, delivering some lovely go-go dancing instead.
